In October 2004, I had just started a new career. I successfully convinced a company to hire me as their Director of Training, even though I had no corporate trainer experience. Sure, I had transferrable skills from my previous career in environmental education; however, my inner voice told me I was not qualified, and I worried that my new employer was about to figure this out. I was nearly paralyzed from imposter syndrome. Within three months, I had deployed the company’s first web-based training course, and it was so successful that the CEO took the training and asked me to create a version for our biggest customer.
How did I move from paralysis to producing ground-breaking results? I bought myself a book and got into massive imperfect action. The book outlined a process I could follow to develop a training strategy and build training programs. I’m not going to share the book title, because honestly, it’s not that great of a book. It was what I needed at that time to help get me into action. I needed an “expert” to give me the steps to move forward, and that’s what the book provided. Ironically, I didn’t follow the steps in the book. Instead, the book gave me ideas and inspiration on the steps I needed to take to achieve success in my specific situation. I leveraged my strengths and created my own path to get there. And in the process of navigating through the fear and uncertainty, my confidence began to increase, and I realized that I was exactly the right person for the job.
I’ve been meeting many people lately that are struggling with imposter syndrome, and I want to help. This is one of many stories I could tell you about my own struggles with it. It can be a very lonely and vulnerable place from which to operate. The good news is, you can get through it, create your path, and achieve great success. If you would like my help, I’ve put together a special package to get you started. I’m offering a 50% discount on my introductory coaching package for new or existing clients that sign up by November 30th. If you would like to learn more, schedule a complimentary consultation.
