I recently facilitated a webinar in which I asked participants to list some people they admired that had positively impacted their lives. Included among the list of names was Ruth Bader Ginsburg or RBG. The very next day, we received the sad news that she had passed away. She indeed was an amazing woman that left a positive impact on society and inspired millions with her strength, courage, and unflappable resolve. What are the keys to her overwhelming success? I certainly don’t have the answers to that question, but I have noticed some patterns in the story of her life that I am taking away as lessons for my own life.
- Don’t Be A Victim: Despite significant obstacles, RBG remained optimistic and did not allow challenges to derail her. When women were not permitted to work in law firms, she instead became a law professor and developed such strong credibility that she eventually was hired by a law firm. She wasn’t a victim of her circumstances but instead chose to be a trailblazer to overcome the roadblocks.
- Follow Your Passion: RBG discovered her passion for law and women’s rights and took the steps necessary to pursue her passion. Fueled by that passion, she accomplished more than she ever thought was possible. What would be possible if you follow your passion? Do you know what your passion is? If not, then it’s time to stop going through the motions of life and invest in figuring out your long-term vision.
- Ask for Help: Nobody knows how to do everything, including RBG. When she first joined the Supreme Court, she dealt with imposter syndrome and was paralyzed by the fear of making a mistake. To help her through this challenge, she asked for help. She found a confidant in Sandra Day O’Conner and got the coaching she needed to strengthen her confidence and learn her new role. Who can you ask for help? Who can help you boost your confidence?
RBG was an extraordinary person. This week I’m asking you to be extraordinary too. Be a trailblazer. Find your passion and follow it. And don’t do it alone; ask for help! If you want my help, I would be honored to work with you!
Wishing you the best!
