This week, I attended a women’s leadership event and “practiced what I preach” to my clients. 

The event was an opportunity to get away from my webcam, leave my house, learn new things, and grow my network.

It was also an opportunity to step out of my comfort zone.

You see, I’m an introvert, and it takes a lot of energy for me to walk into a room full of strangers and network with them.

And, I almost didn’t do it.

My list of “reasons” not to go to the event was long….

• I didn’t sleep well, and I’m tired
• I don’t have the energy to meet new people
• I’m too busy and need to get caught up on work
• It’s a long drive to get there
• It’s raining outside
• I don’t feel like wearing real pants

But I dismissed those excuses and came up with a strategy.

Instead of “working the room,” my goal was to make meaningful connections with TWO people.

• Rather than focus on quantity, I focused on quality
• Instead of doing a lot of talking, I spent more time listening and being curious
• To avoid getting bored with polite small talk, I prepared questions to get them to open up to me
• Rather than telling people about me, I waited for them to ask

How did it work out? 

I left there with two new friends and professional colleagues. 

And even though I wasn’t planning to sell my services at the event, they expressed interest in hiring me and scheduled a follow-up meeting.

Good things happen when you leave your comfort zone.

So, it’s time to get uncomfortable! Over the next week, I challenge you to do one thing outside of your comfort zone – and send me a note to let me know how it went!
