Recently, I’ve been reflecting deeply on the importance of family and the impact of loss in our lives. As many of you know, my dad recently passed away, and it’s been a time of sorrow, immense reflection, and gratitude for the wonderful father he was.
In his honor, I want to share a little about my dad and the invaluable lessons he taught me.
He was a man who epitomized dedication and love for his family, always finding time to be present and engaged despite a demanding work schedule. His ability to listen, his patience, and his sense of humor touched everyone he met. Even decades later, friends and neighbors still fondly recall his kindness and guidance. He believed in the power of sharing talents and lending a helping hand to others. His legacy of compassion and genuine care resonates deeply with me, especially now.
In light of my recent experience, I want to offer some insights on how to support employees who are navigating loss:
Acknowledge Their Loss
Take the time to express your condolences sincerely. Simple gestures of empathy go a long way in showing support.
Offer Practical Support
Be flexible with work arrangements and deadlines if possible. Understand that grief can impact concentration and productivity.
Respect Their Privacy
Everyone processes grief differently. Respect their need for space and privacy while also letting them know you’re available if they need to talk.
Offer Concrete Support
Instead of vague offers like “Let me know if I can help,” offer specific options. For example, “May I arrange a delivery of comfort food for you?” or “Would it be ok if I arranged for snow removal/lawn care over the next few weeks, so you don’t have to worry about it?”
Avoid Clichés
While well-intended, phrases like “everything happens for a reason” may not provide comfort. Instead, listen actively and let them guide the conversation.
Create a Supportive Environment
Encourage team members to express their condolences and offer support. Consider organizing a tribute or memorial if appropriate.
I want to thank those who offered condolences and supported me while I grieve. You have touched my heart, and I will always be grateful for your kindness and thoughtfulness.
As I navigate these challenging times, I find solace in remembering my dad’s unwavering love and wisdom. His legacy will continue to inspire me in my work and personal life.
Wishing you the best!
