When someone compliments your work or thanks you for your efforts, do you find yourself deflecting with phrases like, “It was a team effort,” or “No problem”?
I’ve been there too. For years, I struggled with simply accepting appreciation. I thought humility meant redirecting the spotlight away from myself. But then someone kindly pointed out what I was doing, and it changed everything.
I reframed my thinking with one simple truth:
Imagine the other person carefully selecting the perfect gift for you, wrapping it beautifully, and presenting it thoughtfully. How would you receive it? Likely, with a warm smile, heartfelt thanks, and genuine appreciation for the effort behind it.
Why not treat compliments and gratitude the same way?
Here’s how to accept these moments with grace and authenticity:
Take a Breath
Old habits can be tough to break. Give yourself a moment to pause, take a breath, and consider how you’d like to respond. This small pause can help you avoid knee-jerk deflection.
Choose Your Words
Respond in a way that honors the intention behind the compliment. Consider saying:
- “Thank you so much—it means a lot to me.”
- “I’m so glad you noticed; I really enjoyed working on this.”
- “It’s my pleasure; I loved collaborating with you on this.”
These responses show your appreciation and reinforce the connection between you and the person offering the gratitude.
Share the Love
If the achievement truly involved a team, there’s no harm in sharing the spotlight—but do so intentionally. Accept the compliment first, then extend it by saying:
“I appreciate you saying that—it means a lot. Would you mind if I shared your sentiments with the team, or would you like to do so yourself?”
This approach honors both the giver and the broader group without diminishing your own contributions.
Practice Daily Gratitude
The more you practice receiving gratitude, the more natural it will feel. Start by embracing a daily gratitude practice. Reflect on what you’re thankful for and how you can express that gratitude to others.
There’s no time like the present to begin your daily gratitude practice. Comment below and share ONE thing you are grateful for!
Wishing you the best!
