Tell me if this resonates with you.
You work long hours in front of a computer. Around 3 pm your energy starts to fade, but you power through because you have a lot of work to get done.
In fact, you’re so busy that you find yourself working late most nights.
By the time you’re done for the day, you’re completely exhausted.
Why are you so tired from sitting in front of a computer all day?
Did you know that the brain consumes 8 times more energy when doing focused work compared to the energy expended doing physical work?
By 3 pm, your brain is drained from staying on task all day.
Brain scientists have discovered that if you want to get the most out of your brain, you should design your day to alternate between highly focused work and “brain breaks.”
You can maximize your productivity and creativity by doing 90 minutes of focused work followed by a 20-minute brain break.
These “brain breaks” allow you to recharge your batteries, which INCREASES your productivity, creativity, and ability to make decisions.
Where are you when you have your best ideas?
One research study found that 80% of respondents have their best ideas in the shower.
When you allow your mind to wander, it integrates, consolidates, and associates all of the information you have in your memory. It’s during these “brain breaks” that you are able to access and combine that information to create an “ah-ha” moment.
So, if you incorporate “brain breaks” throughout your day, you will have more “ah-ha” moments, it will be easier to make decisions, and you’ll increase your overall productivity.
And make sure you’re actually taking a brain break. Reading the news, checking social media, watching TV, or playing games on your phone are actually “brain drain” activities because they require focused attention.
Look for activities that allow your mind to wander, such as:
- Going for walk
- Playing with children or pets
- Staring out a window
- Taking a nap
- Meditating
- Listening to music
You get the idea! Step away from your screens. Break free from “always on task mode,” and give yourself a break…literally!
Wishing you the best!
