I was working with a client this week on taking the next step with her personal and professional vision – making a COMMITMENT to pursue her dreams.
It’s all fun and games to dream big about what you want out of your career and life. It’s a whole new level when things start to get real.
That’s where fear starts creeping in.
And fear can be paralyzing.
So, how do you push past the fear, work through the discomfort, and really go for what you want?
Write a Belief Narrative
Create a LONG list of all the reasons you believe you CAN achieve your goals. Include your skills, talents, education, philosophies, experiences, strengths, personal characteristics, and anything else you can think of. Use complete sentences and the word “I.” Write until you can’t think of anything else, take a break, and come back the next day to write some more. You will be amazed at how much evidence you will uncover that you are FULLY CAPABLE of achieving your goals!
Recall Past Successes
Reflect on previous challenges you have experienced in your career and life. How did you navigate through those challenges? What did you learn? The challenges ahead of you might be very different from your past challenges. So, think about the transferrable skills you can apply. Look for patterns that have served you well, such as leaning into your strengths to offset your skill gaps during the learning process.
Call Your Person
Hopefully, you have someone in your life that believes in you more than you believe in yourself. This might be a parent, spouse, best friend, or coach. Have a conversation with your person about what you hope to accomplish and the fear you’re feeling. Tell them you want their help to overcome your fear and start working towards your goal. And then listen. They will point out your strengths to boost your confidence!
If you’ve created aspirational goals for yourself, I encourage you to embrace the fear as part of your growth process and work through it. You will be glad you did!
Wishing you the best!
