What do you want to get out of your career?
Yes, we all need income to pay the bills, and ANY job will give you a paycheck.
What do you really want?
Developing a career plan is one of the best ways to make your dreams a reality.
Consider Your Guiding Criteria
What “ingredients” do you need to have a career filled with passion and purpose? Think about your interests, needs, values, and motivations. These criteria act as a compass to explore and evaluate your options and make decisions on your career direction.
Refer to my visioning exercise in last week’s Amy’s Insights for an exercise to help you create your guiding criteria.
You could also think about what you would like more of or less of in your career and what you are wildly curious about.
Come up with a list of 8-12 statements that are key ingredients for your ideal career.
Prioritize Your Guiding Criteria
Create a prioritized list of your guiding criteria. If you’re struggling, use a forced choice, paired comparison approach.
This prioritization will help you clarify what is most important to you.
Build Your Plan
Now that you have more clarity about what you want start mapping out a plan about how to get it.
Your plan might include…
- Researching career options that align with your criteria
- Exploring additional education or training to build the skills needed for your future career
- Networking to learn more about potential career paths
- Networking to connect you with career opportunities
Ask yourself what you need to take yourself from your current career to the career of your dreams.
Once you have a plan, you can start working toward the next chapter in your career journey!
Wishing you the best!
