Nearly 20 years ago, I convinced a company to hire me as their Director of Training, even though I had ZERO corporate training experience. Sure, I had transferable skills from my previous career; however, my inner voice told me I was not qualified, and I worried that my new employer was about to figure this out.
I was paralyzed from imposter syndrome.
Within three months, I had produced such significant results that the CEO called me into his office to congratulate me and ask me to work on a project for him.
How did I move from paralysis to getting special recognition from the CEO?
I bought myself a book and got into MASSIVE IMPERFECT ACTION.
The book outlined a process I could follow to develop a training strategy and build training programs. I won’t share the book title because, honestly, it’s not that great of a book.
It was what I needed at that time to help get me into action. I needed guidance to move forward, which the book provided.
Ironically, I didn’t follow the steps in the book. Instead, the book inspired me with new ideas.
I leveraged my strengths and created my own path to get there.
And in the process of navigating through the fear and uncertainty, my confidence began to increase, and I realized that I was exactly the right person for the job.
This is one of MANY STORIES I could tell you about my struggles with imposter syndrome. Twenty years ago, I figured out the system that works for me to break through those struggles.
- Lean into your strengths.
- Find something that inspires you.
- Get into massive imperfect action.
I don’t know if there’s a way to prevent imposter syndrome. But rest assured, you CAN get through it, create your own path, and succeed!
Wishing you the best!
