Elevating Your Career

by | Oct 13, 2023 | Blog

People often ask me how to elevate their careers. Sometimes, their aspirations are crystal clear, while at other times, they aim for the elusive “next level” without a defined vision.

So, how do you pursue that “next level” career when you don’t have a clear picture of what it looks like?

Believe it or not, it’s possible to position yourself for advancement even if you don’t know what that next position is. I’m speaking from experience here. Every job I ever held, aside from the one I was initially hired into, did not exist until I was promoted into it.

Here’s my playbook for achieving it:

Set Clear Goals

Your career goals don’t have to be defined by specific job titles. Reflect on the type of work that truly excites you, the impact you aspire to have, and whether you crave decision-making authority or relish taking the lead. And don’t underestimate the power of defining what you don’t want in your career.

Showcase Your Expertise

Identify areas where you excel and passionately contribute. Share your passion during conversations with your boss. Your expertise will become a magnet for higher-profile opportunities.

Seek Feedback and Communicate Your Ambitions

Solicit feedback from a variety of sources. Engage with mentors, your manager, colleagues, and trusted advisors. Discover your strengths and areas for growth through their insights. Listen carefully to their perspectives on the trajectory of your career. Requesting feedback demonstrates your commitment to continuous improvement and can be a catalyst for advancement.

Network with Purpose

Build relationships with key decision-makers and influencers within your organization. Also, build your external network by attending industry events and joining relevant professional associations.

Volunteer for Challenging and High Profile Projects

Raise your hand for projects that align with your goals, even if they seem daunting. Your willingness to embrace challenges sends a powerful message about your dedication and potential. And when you’re involved in high-profile projects, ensure your contributions shine through with remarkable results. Tangible achievements will strengthen your case for advancement.

Develop a Personal Brand

Invest in Lifelong Learning:

Consistently focus on learning activities to stay at the cutting edge of your field and cultivate your professional skills. Explore workshops, courses, conferences, and even university courses. Consider hiring a coach to expedite your growth. Negotiate with your employer for financial support for your educational activities. If all else fails, allocate a portion of your annual budget to invest in your own education.

Advocate for Yourself

Be your own advocate. If you believe you’re ready for a higher-profile role or project, express your interest and provide a compelling case for your readiness.

Leverage Your Support Network

Don’t underestimate the value of leaning on your support network—friends, family, and colleagues. They can provide not only encouragement but also invaluable insights along your journey.

Pursuing the next level in your career may feel like a climb, but you can reach new heights with determination and a strategic approach. Your career journey is a reflection of your dreams and aspirations, and it’s worth every ounce of effort you put into it.

Here’s to your exciting path of career growth and professional advancement!

Wishing you the best!

Amy
