Imagine that you were so fired up about achieving a goal that all your procrastination and excuses magically disappeared!
Wouldn’t it be great to have the time, energy, and motivation to work on our personal and professional goals unencumbered?
The reality is it takes hard work to “do the right things” that will help you achieve a goal.
This week, I spoke with a group about tapping into your natural motivators to help you get started and sustain momentum while working towards your goals.
If you understand what motivates you and what DOES NOT motivate you, then you can use that knowledge to develop strategies that will support you in pursuing your goals.
Let’s say you are motivated by competition. How might you develop a strategy that taps into that motivator and spurs you into action? You might try creating a scorecard for yourself and assigning points for completing specific activities that support your goal. Then you could reward yourself for hitting certain milestones on your scoreboard. If you’re having fun with that competitive motivation, you’ll find that the procrastination and excuses no longer get in your way!
Sometimes your motivators might feel like they’re working against you.
For example, you might be motivated by helping others and having a meaningful impact on society. And let’s say your goal is to develop your skills to get a promotion. You might feel that your goal doesn’t align with helping others, and it’s selfish to focus on your development.
So, it’s time to dig a little deeper. Focusing on your development to land that promotion opens up many more opportunities for you to help others. Your bigger paycheck will allow you to give more generously to your favorite charities. Your increased authority will allow you to influence decisions that impact others. You can use your experience to mentor and help others with their careers. There are so many possibilities! And by NOT working towards your goal, you are closing the door on those possibilities. Do you see what I did there?
Go ahead, and set those ambitious goals for yourself! And dig into your motivators to help you get there!
Wishing you the best!
