How Can You Be a Great Boss?

My husband, Mark, has a great boss. I know his boss is great, even though I’ve never met him. Why? I can see how happy, fulfilled, and engaged Mark is in his career.

Being a leader in a corporate job isn’t easy. You’re faced with a lot of demands from all angles. Nobody wants to be a bad boss; it’s a byproduct of being overwhelmed. This video sums up what it can feel like when you’re in a leadership role.

So, how can you be a great boss AND keep all of the plates spinning AND spin additional plates that are handed to you?

Plan & Prioritize

Sometimes you need to slow down to speed up. Carve out time for yourself at least once per quarter to plan. Review all of your current and future priorities and develop your strategy. Your strategy should include how you plan to lead, develop and engage your team. There’s never enough time or budget for an offsite teambuilding event. Do it anyhow because it’s important. Create space in your calendar for one-on-one meetings with your direct reports to have career and development conversations. 

Delegate to Develop

Remember that you don’t have to do it all yourself. Nobody likes to be “dumped” on, but people do want to be developed. Is there anything you are doing that could be a learning opportunity for one of your subordinates? Perhaps there’s a team member that is showing leadership qualities. Develop those leadership qualities further by delegating one of your “plates” to them. Of course, you will need to support any delegation with coaching and feedback, which might require more time than doing it yourself initially. However, once they are proficient, you will have more capacity for yourself AND engage them with the developmental experience.

Practice Renewal

Renewal is an important concept from Resonant Leadership. You will be a better leader if you make time to refresh, recalibrate, and renew. Use every one of your vacation days every year. And by “use,” I am referring to completely disconnecting from work. If you think you can’t possibly disconnect, go back and re-read Delegate to Develop! Incorporate opportunities for renewal into your daily routine through meditation, yoga, or exercise. Take your lunch break away from your desk and devices. Find opportunities to connect with others and energize yourself with laughter.
