Recently I’ve been coaching a few clients on improving their verbal communication skills and speaking persuasively.
So, we’ve been applying the PREPI model. PREPI stands for Point, Reason, Evidence, Point-again, Invite others to speak.
Assume you want to persuade your boss to invest in your professional development. Here’s what the PREPI model looks like in action.
Point
Hi boss, I wanted to talk to you today about hiring a leadership coach.
Reason
We’ve talked about my career trajectory, and I believe coaching would accelerate my progress, ensuring I am ready when the next career opportunity becomes available.
Evidence
By investing in a coach, the company will receive a return on that investment through my development AND my team’s development. Coaching will provide me with individualized support targeted to my unique development areas. It will give me a safe space to be vulnerable, receive feedback, learn through experience, and increase my confidence. My coach and I can work through specific on-the-job situations and use them as my learning lab to try out new skills. As my leadership effectiveness improves, I can take on increasing levels of responsibility. Additionally, as I experience coaching, it will help me be a better coach for my team and increase their effectiveness.
Point Again
I want to hire a leadership coach and ask for your support.
