Build Resilience with Inspirational Mentors

I had the good fortune of working for a fantastic boss who was also my coach and mentor.  I admired her ability to look for the positive in every situation and approach obstacles as opportunities to learn.  Even though we have not worked together for about eight years, I still draw inspiration from her, especially when it comes to resilience.  I have developed the ability to stop myself when I start to feel overwhelmed by a situation and ask, “What would CJ do?”

As we continue our focus on resilience during July, here’s another tool you can try.

  1. Think about three people that inspire you and write their names down. They can be people that you know well and have a relationship with, or someone that you have never met but have admired from afar.  They can be real or fictional characters, dead or alive.  They just need to be a source of inspiration for you. These are your “inspirational mentors.”
  2. Next to the name of your inspirational mentors, list at least five reasons each one of them inspires you.
  3. Now write down the goal you want to achieve and the challenge(s) that is getting in your way.
  4. Think about how each of your inspirational mentors would handle your challenge. What would they do if they were in your situation?  What would they think or say about your mindset and approach regarding overcoming your challenge and attaining your goal?

Getting out of your head and looking at things from a different perspective can help you identify alternative solutions.  Tap into your inspirational mentors to help you get unstuck.
